What is a vCISO (virtual CISO)?
Glossary
The short answer |
|---|
A vCISO (virtual chief information security officer) is a security executive who provides CISO services to an organization on a part-time, contract or retainer basis, usually remotely. A vCISO sets security strategy, owns the risk register and roadmap, guides compliance work such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001, and represents security to customers, auditors and the board. |
How does a vCISO engagement work?
Engagements usually start with an assessment of your current security, followed by a prioritized roadmap. After that, the vCISO meets the team on a regular cadence, reviews progress and steps in for high-stakes moments such as customer security reviews, audits and incidents. Typical responsibilities include:
Strategy: a security roadmap tied to business goals and customer requirements.
Risk: maintaining a risk register and deciding what to fix first.
Policy: writing and approving security policies.
Compliance: guiding SOC 2, ISO 27001 and similar programs.
Customers: answering security questionnaires and joining sales calls.
Incidents: leading response planning and decisions during an incident.
vCISO vs full-time CISO
vCISO | Full-time CISO | |
|---|---|---|
Time commitment | Part time, shared with other clients | Dedicated |
Cost | A fraction of an executive salary | Full executive compensation |
Context | Builds up over time, limited hours | Deep, daily |
Best fit | Early and growth-stage companies | Larger or highly regulated companies |
Why does a vCISO matter for startups?
Most startups need security leadership well before they can afford or keep busy a full-time CISO. Enterprise buyers want to know who owns security, and an experienced vCISO lends credibility in those conversations. The limit is hours: a vCISO who works a few days a month cannot personally run every scan, chase every piece of evidence or review every pull request.
How NexusVoid handles it
NexusVoid runs your security program for you like an autonomous CISO, with compliance as the by-product. If you already have a CISO or vCISO, it automates most of their work, so their time goes to decisions rather than evidence chasing. If you have neither, it acts as your CISO.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a vCISO and a fractional CISO?
In practice the terms are used interchangeably. Both describe a security leader who works for you part time, usually alongside other clients. Some people use fractional CISO for an individual on a regular weekly schedule and vCISO for a service delivered by a consulting firm, but there is no formal standard, so read the contract to see what is actually included.
When should a startup hire a vCISO?
Common triggers are a first enterprise deal with a long security questionnaire, a SOC 2 or ISO 27001 project, a regulator or investor asking who owns security, or a security incident. If nobody on the team has the time or experience to set priorities and answer customers credibly, a vCISO fills that gap until you can justify a full-time hire.
What does a vCISO not do?
Most vCISOs set direction and review work rather than doing hands-on engineering. They usually do not patch servers, write detection rules, run daily scans or chase evidence screenshots. That operational work still needs people or tooling. Clarify up front who executes, because a strategy document with no one to implement it changes very little.
Can software replace a vCISO?
Software can take over much of the repetitive work a vCISO would otherwise coordinate, such as evidence collection, control monitoring, scanning and questionnaire drafts. It does not replace accountability. Someone in the company still decides which risks to accept and answers to customers and the board. Many teams pair a vCISO with automation so the vCISO’s limited hours go to judgment calls.
