What is compliance automation?

Glossary

The short answer

Compliance automation is the use of software to run the repetitive parts of a compliance program: mapping controls to frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA or GDPR, connecting to cloud, code and identity systems to collect evidence automatically, monitoring whether controls keep working, and producing auditor-ready records. It reduces manual screenshots and spreadsheets, but people still own decisions and the audit itself.

How does compliance automation work?

  1. Scope: choose frameworks and describe your systems, data and team.

  2. Map controls: translate each framework requirement into concrete controls, ideally shared across frameworks.

  3. Connect: integrate with cloud providers, code hosting, identity providers, HR and device management.

  4. Collect evidence: pull configuration and activity data on a schedule instead of taking screenshots.

  5. Monitor: alert when a control drifts, such as a new admin without MFA.

  6. Export: package policies, evidence and history for the auditor.

What can and cannot be automated?

Usually automated

Still needs people

Cloud and code configuration checks

Approving policies

Access and MFA status from identity providers

Accepting or rejecting risks

Device encryption and screen lock status

Access reviews and sign-off

Evidence scheduling and reminders

Incident decisions

Policy drafts from templates

Auditor interviews

Why does compliance automation matter for startups?

Startups usually pursue compliance because a customer requires it, often on a deadline. Doing it by hand pulls engineers off product work and leaves you with evidence that goes stale the day after the audit. Automation shortens the first push and keeps you ready for the next audit and the next questionnaire. The trap to avoid is treating compliance as the goal: passing a checklist is not the same as being secure.

How NexusVoid handles it

Aegis is NexusVoid’s compliance automation product. It covers SOC 2, ISO 27001, DPDP, GDPR, HIPAA, PCI DSS, NIST CSF, NIST AI RMF and the EU AI Act using shared controls, so one control serves many frameworks. It provides tailored policies, automatic evidence from cloud, GitHub, identity and devices, a risk register, vendor management, questionnaires answered from evidence, a trust center, a device agent, employee security training and auditor-ready exports.

Frequently asked questions

Can compliance automation get me SOC 2 certified?

No tool issues a SOC 2 report. SOC 2 is an attestation by an independent CPA firm, and the auditor decides the outcome. Compliance automation prepares you: it maps controls, collects evidence, flags gaps and packages everything for the auditor. It can shorten preparation a lot, but you still need to operate the controls and pass the audit.

What parts of compliance cannot be automated?

Decisions and some human activities. Someone must approve policies, accept risks, run tabletop exercises, review access, and complete security training. Auditor interviews and judgments are human too. Software can schedule, remind, record and collect proof of these activities, but it cannot make the decisions or do the training on an employee’s behalf.

Is compliance automation worth it for an early-stage startup?

Usually yes if a customer is asking for SOC 2, ISO 27001 or a long questionnaire. Doing it by hand means weeks of spreadsheets and screenshots, then repeating the work every year. Automation makes the first audit faster and the second one far easier, because evidence keeps flowing instead of being rebuilt from scratch.

How does compliance automation handle multiple frameworks?

Good tools use shared controls: one control, such as enforcing multi-factor authentication, is mapped to the matching requirements in every framework you pursue. The evidence is collected once and reused. Adding a second framework then means covering only the gaps, not starting over.
